Click your heels together three times, because the Veterinary Technician Symposium is back and we're getting into the spirit of Oz! This sell-out event is a unique opportunity for veterinary technicians to sharpen their practical skills in an exciting educational atmosphere. Offered at the world-famous Viticus Center in Las Vegas, NV, expert instructors – using today’s most innovative instructional approaches and technology – present skill-based training in anesthesia, clinical pathology, and surgery techniques.

Working in small groups, participants rotate through active learning stations and experience the full extent of authority-centered lectures, workshops, and cooperative small group interaction. Outside of the classroom, spend time bonding with your family of technicians through fun, interactive games and Oz-themed social events!

Clinical Pathology

This course will cover sample collection, processing, review cellular identification, and validation of results of a complete blood count from start to finish.  Hands-on experiences will include blood slide preparation and microscopic review of slides.  

After completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Minimize errors during the collection process 
  • Prioritize tests to maximize test results
  • Practice blood slide preparation
  • Recognize factors that affect results
  • Identify cells and structures in blood films
  • Evaluate the validity of automated results

 

  

Surgery

This section of the course will cover key principles of the aseptic technique, breaks in sterility, and a demonstration of basic general instrument identifications. The hands-on section will cover the roles and responsibilities of both the circulating nurse and the scrub nurse. Participants will learn how to properly execute these roles while maintaining both sterility and efficiency.

After completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Identify clipping margins and positioning for various common and more advanced surgical procedures
  • Identify and recognize ways contamination may occur in surgery
  • Demonstrate how to maintain a sterile field and proper OR etiquette       
  • Setting up the operating room, connecting electrocautery units and suction canisters
  • Learn how to properly store surgical packs and sterile pouches

Courtyard Lodging Includes: 

  • Airport Pick up: Available on request, 7 days a week starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p
  • Guests will need to call the hotel upon arrival (702.434.4700) after they pick up their luggage. At that time, we will inform them of the area they will be picked up and we will send the shuttle driver.
  • Airport drop off: All drop-offs are every two hours, starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p. Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior to departing.
  • Shuttle service to Las Vegas Strip: Pickups and drop-offs are outside the Mandalay Bay Tour and Trolley stop.

  • Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior.
  • Ground transportation to/from hotel and Viticus Center.
  • Be ready at the Courtyard hotel lobby 30 minutes in advance of course start time and board the van for the short ride to the Viticus Center. View Map.
  • Return to the hotel at the end of the instructional day.

TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation in Las Vegas is limited. If you are staying somewhere other than our preferred partner, Hampton Inn & Suites Las Vegas Airport, you will need to arrange for your transportation to and from the Oquendo Center. If you are renting a car, Mandalay Bay, Luxor and several other hotels on the strip may charge for parking. Other transportation options for getting around are taxi service, Uber and Lyft.

PACKING TIPS

  1. WVC scrubs are available upon your arrival if needed.

  2. Closed-toe shoes are required during labs.

  3. A light sweater for indoor areas.

  4. Plenty of sunscreen.

  5. Electronic charging device to power up.

  6. Valid ID - We highly recommend you carry your ID at all times in Las Vegas.
