This course in small animal arthroscopy is an introduction to the safe use of arthroscopy equipment and basic diagnostic and treatment of joint disease. Arthroscopy is the gold standard method of joint examination for many common canine joint diseases including elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament disease, and meniscal injury. Arthroscopy and arthroscopic-assisted surgery will greatly improve treatment options for veterinarians with interest in orthopedic surgery.

The course will allow for ample hands-on opportunity to learn how to use that equipment safely, and how to gain access to the elbow, shoulder, and stifle joint to allow for basic diagnostic evaluation and possible treatment. Following lecture, the participants will have the opportunity to practice in the laboratory using arthroscopic equipment. Specific focus will be on the necessary instrumentation, the indications for arthroscopy and patient preparation, and the creation of scope and instrument portals for elbow, shoulder, and stifle joints. In addition, completing a procedure by performing an arthroscopic-assisted arthrotomy will be covered. Who Should Attend This course is appropriate for specialists, residents, interns, and small animal practitioners with an interest in orthopedic surgery. Delegates should have a thorough understanding of the common causes of small animal orthopedic disease commonly diagnosed and treated with arthroscopy, including elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament disease, and shoulder osteochondrosis.

Hands-on training led by expert instructors equals enhanced proficiency and improved surgical skills. Build your confidence with accuracy and efficiency:

  • Review the instrumentation necessary for arthroscopic surgery
  • Understand the indications for arthroscopy
  • Demonstrate patient preparation and positioning for each joint discussed
  • Complete basic arthroscopic examination of the elbow, shoulder and stifle joints
  • Demonstrate the concept of a 30 degree arthroscope
  • Predict possible complications associated with arthroscopic surgery
