The VETAHEAD online course, “A clinician’s guide to incorporating rabbits into your practice” is a pre-requisite and must be completed prior to this hands-on wet lab. The online course is not included with the wet lab registration. Students must go to www.vetahead.vet to sign up for the online course.

VETAHEAD COURSE

This two-day wet lab only course will provide intensive live and cadaver hands-on experience of a wide array of medicine, surgery, commonly performed techniques and procedures in rabbits. The course is aimed at general practice or university veterinarians with a keen interest in starting a rabbit medicine service or wishing to expand their capabilities. The wet lab will cover aspects of rabbit anatomy, handling, clinical techniques, clinical skills, therapeutics, anesthesia, medicine and surgery, among other important topics.

This hands-on wet lab will have tips and tricks thrown in from the highly experienced course instructors. Individual assistance from instructors will be
available throughout the labs to help participants optimize their skills.

Learning Objectives - A Clinician's Guide to Incorporating Rabbits into your Practice

Wet Lab Course Description:

This intensive two-day wet lab will provide ample time for practicing the techniques learned in the online course*. Live and cadaver wet lab sessions will be available. The following topics will include:

• Anatomy, handling, restraint, and physical examination
• Clinical techniques, including blood collection, IV catheter placement, nasolacrimal
duct flushing, nasogastric intubation
• Sedation, anesthesia and analgesia, including endotracheal intubation
• Rabbit oral examination including stomatoscopy, teeth trimming, and teeth extraction
• Elective surgical procedures in rabbits (orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy)

Course Learning Objectives:

• Know how to properly restrain and examine the rabbit patient
• Know how to obtain diagnostic samples and perform clinical techniques
• Develop a detailed understanding and confidence in rabbit anesthesia and analgesia, including endotracheal intubation
• Develop the ability and confidence to perform teeth trimming and teeth extraction, including stomatoscopy
• Develop a detailed understanding and confidence of the principles of surgery in rabbits
• Develop the ability to perform orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy in rabbits and understand important surgical principles to optimize outcomes and avoid complications

Courtyard Lodging Includes: 

  • Airport Pick up: Available on request, 7 days a week starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p
  • Guests will need to call the hotel upon arrival (702.434.4700) after they pick up their luggage. At that time, we will inform them of the area they will be picked up and we will send the shuttle driver.
  • Airport drop-off: All drop-offs are every two hours, starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p. Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior to departing.
  • Shuttle service to Las Vegas Strip: Pickups and drop-offs are outside the Mandalay Bay Tour and Trolley stop.

  • Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior.
  • Ground transportation to/from hotel and Viticus Center.
  • Be ready at the Courtyard hotel lobby 30 minutes in advance of course start time and board the van for the short ride to the Viticus Center. View Map.
  • Return to the hotel at the end of the instructional day.

TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation in Las Vegas is limited. If you are staying somewhere other than our preferred partner, Courtyard Las Vegas Henderson/Green Valley, you will need to arrange for your transportation to and from the Viticus Center. If you are renting a car, Mandalay Bay, Luxor and several other hotels on the strip may charge for parking. Other transportation options for getting around are taxi service, Uber and Lyft.

PACKING TIPS

  1. Scrubs are available upon your arrival if needed.

  2. Closed-toe shoes are required during labs.

  3. A light sweater for indoor areas.

  4. Plenty of sunscreen.

  5. Electronic charging device to power up.

  6. Valid ID - We highly recommend you carry your ID at all times in Las Vegas.
