Advancing Spine Care Through Hands-On Cadaveric Training

The International Spine Study Group (ISSG) stands at the forefront of adult spine deformity research. With 28 partner sites in the U.S. and Canada and more than 40 surgeons and data scientists collaborating, ISSG continues to redefine how complex spinal conditions are studied, understood, and treated.

During the latest ISSG Annual Meeting, held at Viticus Group, attendees had the rare opportunity to hear directly from patients whose lives have been changed by this work. Among them was Michaela, whose journey highlights the impact and hope made possible through the dedication of ISSG surgeons.

Michaela’s Story with ISSG

Michaela Davert, now 26, was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare condition that causes fragile bones. Throughout her childhood and early adulthood, she suffered over a hundred fractures and went through 30 surgeries. By the age of 20, she faced an unimaginable decision: either undergo a spinal fusion, a procedure known for its grueling recovery, or accept that her life expectancy might be less than a decade.

Choosing surgery came with enormous challenges. At the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Michaela endured not one but two spinal fusions. Isolated from loved ones, she spent both Christmas and New Year’s in a hospital room, confronting relentless pain and recovery on her own.

Her perseverance, faith, and the skill of ISSG surgeons carried her through. Today, Michaela is not only surviving but thriving. She shares her journey to encourage others, reminding people to fight for life’s possibilities. Her story has reached far beyond the medical community. She's appeared in People magazine, been lit up on a Times Square billboard, and has been amplified her online platforms. Every step she takes reinforces her message: life is always worth the struggle.
