This course delivers hands-on training for managing brachycephalic patients requiring upper airway surgery. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is common, and careful perioperative assessment and management is essential for good outcomes. Anesthesia can be challenging and requires several peri-operative considerations and interventions. Concurrent and related aerodigestive disorders are also critical to understand and diagnose appropriately. Led by a world-renowned soft tissue surgeon, an internal medicine specialist focused on airway disease, an anesthesiologist and experienced resident, this team will guide you through their approach to brachycephalic patients, using a case-based scenarios and proven methods, so you leave with the confidence and tools for your next pug or bulldog surgery.

Learning Objectives
Understand the components of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).
Understand the respiratory system of brachycephalic dogs and how to recognize radiographic and endoscopic changes in the brachycephalic patient.
Appreciate the connection between upper GI conditions and BOAS.
Understand the risks and best practices to induce, maintain, and recover a brachycephalic dog under general anesthesia.
Realize the importance of preoperative interventions to minimize complications in the post-operative period.
Perform the techniques under supervision for BOAS surgery and sampling the airways in brachycephalic dogs.
Learn how to recognize complications and manage them.
