This course is designed for emergency veterinarians and general practitioners who wish to take their surgical and urgent care skills further. Interactive lectures including clinical case discussions introduce laboratory procedures and provide a context for perioperative management, especially for those emergent cases. Participants enjoy ample opportunity to practice procedures on both canine and feline cadavers with one-on-one guidance from ACVS and ACVECC-certified instructors. Topics to be explored include thoracic trauma, GDV with necrosis, obstructive biliary disease, liver trauma, and urinary obstruction. Participants are encouraged to submit clinical cases for discussion.

Learning Objectives - Core Surgical Procedures for the GP and Emergency Vet

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the principles of gastrointestinal surgery and gastric and intestinal resection
  • Know how to properly stabilize and treat dogs with acute gastric dilatation volvulus
  • Know the indications, surgical techniques, and postoperative management of gall bladder diseases in dogs
  • Know various techniques for abdominal visceral biopsy
  • Understand indications, techniques, and potential complications of upper respiratory tract surgery
  • Develop confidence in the surgical management of ear disease and salivary gland disease
  • Optimize treatment of commonly observed diaphragmatic and perineal hernias
  • Develop the ability to perform perineal urethrostomy in cats and understand important surgical principles to optimize outcomes

Courtyard Lodging Includes: 

  • Airport Pick up: Available on request, 7 days a week starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p
  • Guests will need to call the hotel upon arrival (702.434.4700) after they pick up their luggage. At that time, we will inform them of the area they will be picked up and we will send the shuttle driver.
  • Airport drop off: All drop-offs are every two hours, starting at 6:00a and ending at 10:00p. Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior to departing.
  • Shuttle service to Las Vegas Strip: Pickups and drop-offs are outside the Mandalay Bay Tour and Trolley stop.

  • Please sign up at the front desk at least 1 hour prior.
  • Ground transportation to/from hotel and Viticus Center.
  • Be ready at the Courtyard hotel lobby 30 minutes in advance of course start time and board the van for the short ride to the Viticus Center. View Map.
  • Return to the hotel at the end of the instructional day.

TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation in Las Vegas is limited. If you are staying somewhere other than our preferred partner you will need to arrange for your transportation to and from the Oquendo Center. If you are renting a car, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and several other hotels on the strip may charge for parking. Other transportation options for getting around are taxi service, Uber and Lyft.

PACKING TIPS

  1. Scrubs are available upon your arrival if needed.

  2. Closed-toe shoes are required during labs.

  3. A light sweater for indoor areas.

  4. Plenty of sunscreen.

  5. Electronic charging device to power up.

  6. Valid ID - We highly recommend you carry your ID at all times in Las Vegas.
